The Litany is an ancient form of prayer that dates back to the earliest days of Christianity. In the East, the Litany (Ektenia) holds an important place in the Eucharistic Liturgy and other divine services of Orthodox Churches. In the West, the only remnant of the Eucharistic Litany is the Kyrie, Eleison (or Lord, have mercy), in both the ordinary and extraordinary forms of the Roman Mass of the Latin Rite.

However, as a form of prayer comprising a set of petitions, the Litany is alive and well in the Roman Catholic Church. There are six Litanies approved for public recitation. These are:

1. The Litany of the Holy Name of Jesus
2. The Litany of the Sacred Heart of Jesus
3. The Litany of the Most Precious Blood of Jesus
4. The Litany of the Blessed Virgin Mary (also known as the Litany of Loreto)
5. The Litany of Saint Joseph
6. The Litany of the Saints.

Numerous other Litanies have been approved for private devotion over the centuries.

The Litany of the Titles of the Blessed Virgin Mary is new. Using the Litany of Loreto as a model, the author has crafted a prayer that invokes many more of Our Lady's titles, including the dogmatic, devotional and those associated with her apparitions.

On 12 August 2011 the Archbishop of Adelaide, Australia, the Most Reverend Philip Wilson issued a Decree of Imprimatur authorising the publication and promotion of this Litany through a private devotion throughout the world.

In due course, the Litany of the Titles of the Blessed Virgin Mary will be published in other languages, including French, Italian, Spanish and German.
